About BC Place

BC Place, with its iconic retractable roof, brings World Cup football to the Pacific coast. Vancouver's diverse Asian and South Asian communities add a unique dimension to the fan experience, and the city's stunning natural beauty provides a spectacular backdrop.

Opened in 1983, BC Place is the home of the Vancouver Whitecaps FC (MLS) and BC Lions (CFL). It was the main stadium for the opening and closing ceremonies of the 2010 Winter Olympics. The original air-supported roof was replaced with a retractable roof in a $514 million renovation completed in 2011.

Getting to BC Place

✈️ Airport

Vancouver International Airport (YVR) is about 9 miles south, connected by the Canada Line SkyTrain.

🚇 Public Transit

SkyTrain's Expo Line and Canada Line both stop at Stadium-Chinatown station, directly adjacent to BC Place. The Canada Line runs from the airport to downtown in about 25 minutes, making this one of the best transit-connected venues in the entire tournament.

🚗 Driving & Parking

Located in downtown Vancouver's False Creek area off Pacific Blvd. Parking garages are available nearby but space is limited. Transit or walking is strongly preferred.

Fan Zones & Watch Parties

The area around BC Place and the adjacent Creekside Park along False Creek is a natural fan zone location. Jack Poole Plaza at the Vancouver Convention Centre — which features the Olympic Cauldron from the 2010 Games — is expected to be a FIFA Fan Fest site with its stunning waterfront setting.

Fan zone locations are based on historical precedent. Official FIFA Fan Fest details will be confirmed closer to the tournament.

Weather & What to Pack

Vancouver in June-July is stunning — average highs of 72°F (22°C) with low humidity and very little rain. It's the most comfortable weather of any World Cup host city. BC Place has a retractable roof, so weather isn't a concern inside the stadium. Outside, the long summer days (sunset after 9pm) and mild temperatures are perfect for exploring the city on foot or by bike. Bring a light jacket for evening matches and waterfront walks — ocean breezes can make it feel cooler than the temperature suggests. On rare hot days (above 80°F), buildings without AC can be uncomfortable since most Vancouver residences don't have it.

Where to Eat & Drink in Vancouver

Vancouver's food scene is defined by its Asian and Pacific Northwest influences. For sushi, Tojo's is legendary (Tojo himself invented the California roll here in the 1970s), while Miku serves outstanding aburi (flame-seared) sushi on the waterfront. In Richmond (a short Canada Line SkyTrain ride), the food courts at Aberdeen Centre and Parker Place have Hong Kong-level dim sum, Cantonese BBQ, and bubble tea. Granville Island Public Market has fresh seafood, artisan bread, and local produce. Gastown has trendy spots like Pidgin (French-Japanese) and Tacofino for West Coast tacos. Main Street's Brewery Creek neighborhood has craft breweries — Brassneck and 33 Acres are standouts. For a quintessential Vancouver experience, eat fresh spot prawns (seasonal in June) on the docks.

🏨

Where to Stay in Vancouver

Downtown Vancouver is compact and walkable, with most hotels within a 15-minute walk of BC Place. Yaletown and Gastown have boutique options ($200-350 CAD/night) with restaurant-lined streets. The West End near Stanley Park is residential with quieter hotels and beach access. For budget stays, hostels in the downtown core are well-located, and Airbnbs in Mount Pleasant or Commercial Drive offer local neighborhood vibes at lower prices. Richmond (near the airport, connected by Canada Line) has Asian-influenced hotels at lower rates ($120-180 CAD/night). North Vancouver across the harbor has ocean views and lower prices but requires a SeaBus ferry to get downtown.

Match Day Experience

BC Place's downtown location makes it one of the most accessible venues in the tournament. SkyTrain's Stadium-Chinatown station is directly adjacent to the stadium — you literally walk off the train and into the gates. The Canada Line from the airport takes 25 minutes to get you there. The False Creek waterfront area around BC Place offers stunning pre-match walks with mountain and water views. The Whitecaps' Southsiders supporter group will bring the energy with drums, flags, and chants. BC Place's retractable roof means guaranteed comfort regardless of weather. The Creekside Park area adjacent to the stadium will likely host large-screen viewing for fans without tickets. After the match, Gastown and Yaletown bars are a 10-minute walk, and SkyTrain runs extended late-night service.

Local Tips — Vancouver

Vancouver is spectacularly beautiful — walk or bike the Seawall around Stanley Park, eat incredible sushi on Robson Street (some of the best outside Japan), and explore Granville Island's public market. The North Shore mountains offer hiking with ocean views just 30 minutes from downtown.

Safety & Etiquette

Vancouver is one of the safest cities in North America for visitors. The downtown core, West End, and Kitsilano are safe and walkable. The Downtown Eastside (east of Gastown around Hastings Street) has visible homelessness and open drug use — walk through quickly or take an alternate route. BC Place is in a safe, well-lit area near False Creek. SkyTrain is clean and safe at all hours. The biggest practical concern is sun protection on clear days — Vancouver's latitude means summer UV is surprisingly strong. Cannabis is legal but prohibited in the stadium and most public spaces.
