About Lumen Field

Lumen Field is famous for being one of the loudest stadiums in America. Home to the Seattle Sounders, the Pacific Northwest's soccer culture runs deep. Seattle's proximity to Canada adds a cross-border flavor to matches here.

Opened in 2002, Lumen Field is the home of the Seattle Seahawks (NFL) and Seattle Sounders FC (MLS). Famous for generating earthquake-level crowd noise (a Guinness World Record of 137.6 dB in 2013), it has a passionate soccer culture thanks to the Sounders' devoted fanbase.

Getting to Lumen Field

✈️ Airport

Seattle-Tacoma International Airport (SEA) is about 14 miles south, connected by Link Light Rail.

🚇 Public Transit

Sound Transit's Link Light Rail serves Stadium station, steps from the venue. The line runs from the airport through downtown, making this one of the most transit-friendly venues. Sounder commuter rail also stops at King Street Station adjacent to the stadium.

🚗 Driving & Parking

Located in Seattle's SoDo district south of downtown, off I-5 and I-90. Parking is limited near the stadium; transit or rideshare is strongly recommended.

Fan Zones & Watch Parties

The area around Pioneer Square and Occidental Park, immediately north of the stadium, is Seattle's match-day gathering spot for Sounders games and the expected fan zone hub. Seattle Center (near the Space Needle) could serve as a secondary FIFA Fan Fest location.

Fan zone locations are based on historical precedent. Official FIFA Fan Fest details will be confirmed closer to the tournament.

Weather & What to Pack

Seattle in June-July is actually one of the best weather windows — average highs of 75°F (24°C) with low humidity and long daylight hours (sunset after 9pm). Rain is unlikely in summer, contrary to Seattle's reputation. Lumen Field is open-air, so afternoon sun can be warm on the west side, but the mild Pacific Northwest climate makes it one of the most comfortable outdoor venues. Bring a light jacket for evening matches as temperatures drop into the mid-50s after sunset. The summer weather is genuinely beautiful — take advantage of it.

Where to Eat & Drink in Seattle

Seattle's food scene revolves around the Pacific Northwest bounty. Pike Place Market is the obvious starting point — get a bowl of chowder at Pike Place Chowder, fresh oysters at the Market Grill, or just browse the fish throwing and flower stalls. In the International District near the stadium, Dough Zone makes outstanding soup dumplings and Maneki is Seattle's oldest Japanese restaurant (since 1904). Capitol Hill has trendy options like Stateside (Vietnamese) and Canon (whiskey bar with 4,000+ bottles). Near Lumen Field, Pioneer Square's bars fill up on match days. For seafood, Taylor Shellfish in Capitol Hill serves the freshest oysters and geoduck in the city.

🏨

Where to Stay in Seattle

Downtown Seattle is walkable to Lumen Field and has the widest hotel selection ($200-350/night). Pioneer Square and the International District are the closest neighborhoods, with some boutique options. Capitol Hill has vibrant nightlife and Airbnb options. For budget stays, look at hotels near the airport in SeaTac — Link Light Rail connects directly to the stadium in about 40 minutes. Belltown (between downtown and Seattle Center) has a mix of hotels and is walkable to everything. The University District has cheaper options, also on the light rail line. Seattle is compact enough that you don't need a car if you stay near a Link station.

Match Day Experience

Lumen Field's location in SoDo, just south of downtown, makes it incredibly accessible. Link Light Rail drops you at Stadium station literally steps from the entrance. The Pioneer Square neighborhood adjacent to the stadium is Seattle's match-day gathering hub — bars like Fuel Sports, Pyramid Alehouse, and the stadium's own Event Deck fill up hours before kickoff. Sounders FC supporters (the Emerald City Supporters) are among the most passionate in MLS and will bring organized chanting, tifos, and drums to World Cup matches. The stadium's design channels crowd noise brilliantly — it once registered a seismic event from fan noise. After the match, Pioneer Square bars stay open late and Link runs extended service.

Local Tips — Seattle

Seattle's coffee culture goes far beyond Starbucks — try Espresso Vivace or Elm Coffee Roasters. Visit Pike Place Market early morning, explore Capitol Hill for nightlife, and if the skies are clear, the views of Mount Rainier are unforgettable.

Safety & Etiquette

Seattle is one of the safer major US cities for visitors. Pioneer Square (near the stadium) has some street-level homelessness but is well-policed on event days. Capitol Hill and downtown are safe and walkable. Link Light Rail is clean and safe. The biggest "risk" in Seattle is forgetting sunscreen on a clear summer day — the northern latitude means UV is strong, and locals aren't always prepared for sun. Keep valuables out of sight in your car. Marijuana is legal in Washington state but prohibited in the stadium.
