WORLD CUP SURVIVOR POOL

Pick one team per round. If they win, you survive. If they lose or draw, you're eliminated. Last one standing wins.

WHAT IS A SURVIVOR POOL?

A World Cup survivor pool (also called an elimination pool or knockout pool) is a prediction game where every round you pick one team you believe will win their match. If your team wins, you survive and advance to the next round. If your team loses or draws, you're immediately eliminated from the pool.

The twist: you can only use each team once during the entire tournament. With 48 teams and up to 8 rounds, strategy matters — do you use a strong team early for safety, or save them for the tougher knockout rounds?

The 2026 FIFA World Cup is the first with 48 teams — up from 32. That expanded field means more potential picks, more favorable group stage matchups, and a brand new Round of 32 in the knockout stage. For survivor pool players, this is a dream: more mid-tier teams playing weaker opponents in the groups, and an extra knockout round that demands deeper planning. The 48-team format makes World Cup survivor pools more strategic and more exciting than ever before.

Survivor pools are hugely popular in American football (NFL), where millions of fans play elimination-style pick'em games every season. But soccer survivor pools for the World Cup are extremely rare. If you've played an NFL survivor pool (also called a suicide pool or knockout pool), the concept is identical — just applied to the biggest tournament in world football. Golazo is one of the only platforms offering this format for the FIFA World Cup 2026.

How It Works

1

Pick One Team

Each round, choose one team from the available matches that you think will WIN.

2

Your Team Wins → You Survive

If your selected team wins their match, you advance to the next round.

3

Your Team Loses or Draws → Eliminated

If your team loses or even draws (group stage), you're out of the pool immediately.

4

No Reusing Teams

Once you pick a team, you cannot use them again for the rest of the tournament.

5

Miss a Deadline → Eliminated

If you forget to submit your pick before the round's deadline, you're automatically eliminated.

6

Last One Standing Wins

The last player(s) still alive at the end of the tournament win the pool.

Round Structure

Group Stage — 3 Rounds

Round 1Matchday 1 — pick 1 team to win
Round 2Matchday 2 — pick 1 team to win
Round 3Matchday 3 — pick 1 team to win

Draws count as a loss — your team must WIN outright.

Knockout Stage — 5 Rounds

Round of 3216 matches
Round of 168 matches
Quarter Finals4 matches
Semi Finals2 matches
Final1 match

In knockouts, your team must advance (penalty shootout wins count).

Survivor Pool Strategy Guide

Group Stage Strategy

The group stage is your best opportunity to conserve top-tier teams. With 48 teams in 12 groups, there are plenty of lopsided matchups — think a mid-ranked European team facing a first-time qualifier. Exploit these favorable matchups early to save your powerhouses (Brazil, France, Argentina, Germany, England) for the knockout rounds where upsets are more common and safer picks are scarcer.

Study the group draw carefully. A team like the Netherlands or Portugal might have a comfortable Matchday 1 fixture against a lower-ranked opponent — that's a perfect survivor pick that doesn't burn a top-4 team.

Save Your Top Picks for the Knockouts

The Round of 32 is brand new for 2026 and it's the wildcard round. Top seeds will face third-place qualifiers — some of whom got hot late in the group stage. This is where you want your Brazil or France pick in your pocket.

From the Quarter Finals onward, every match is a coin flip between strong teams. Having an unused powerhouse for the Semis or Final could be the difference between winning and losing your pool.

Reading the Knockout Bracket

Not all sides of the knockout bracket are equal. One half might have three top-10 teams while the other has more mid-tier sides. Identify the "easier" side of the bracket and pick from those matchups when possible. A team on the softer side of the draw is more likely to advance, even if they're not the strongest team on paper.

Common Mistakes

Using top teams in Round 1

You'll desperately need them in the knockout rounds. A mid-tier team with a favorable matchup is a better pick.

Ignoring draws

In the group stage, draws are extremely common in soccer — especially on Matchday 3 when teams have already qualified. A draw eliminates you.

Missing deadlines

Automatic elimination. Set phone reminders for every round deadline. Check the countdown timer on your pool dashboard.

Not planning ahead

With only 8 rounds and each team usable once, you need to think 2-3 rounds ahead. Don't paint yourself into a corner with no safe picks left.

Multi-Round Planning

The best survivor pool players map out all 8 rounds before the tournament starts. Draft a plan: which team will you use for each round? Your plan will change as the tournament unfolds, but having a roadmap prevents panic picks.

A common framework: allocate 3 mid-tier teams for the group stage, use 2 strong teams for the Round of 32 and Round of 16, and save your 3 strongest remaining teams for the Quarter Finals, Semi Finals, and Final.

Example 8-Round Plan

Rd 1 (Group MD1)Mid-tier team A with easy fixture
Rd 2 (Group MD2)Mid-tier team B with easy fixture
Rd 3 (Group MD3)Mid-tier team C (avoid MD3 draws)
Round of 32Strong team vs weak 3rd-place qualifier
Round of 16Strong team on easier bracket side
Quarter FinalsTop-tier team (save your best)
Semi FinalsTop-tier team
FinalYour strongest remaining team
