About Estadio Azteca

The legendary Estadio Azteca hosts the Opening Match on June 11, 2026. The only venue to have hosted two World Cup Finals (1970, 1986), the Azteca will make history again as part of the first tri-nation tournament. Expect the most electric atmosphere of the entire World Cup.

Opened in 1966, Estadio Azteca is the most legendary World Cup venue in history — the only stadium to host two FIFA World Cup Finals (1970 and 1986). It witnessed Pelé's triumph in 1970 and Maradona's 'Hand of God' and 'Goal of the Century' in 1986. Home to Club América and the Mexico national team, it is the largest stadium in Mexico. Extensive renovations have been underway to prepare for 2026.

Getting to Estadio Azteca

✈️ Airport

Mexico City International Airport (MEX) is about 14 miles northeast.

🚇 Public Transit

Take Mexico City Metro Line 2 to Tasqueña station, then transfer to the Tren Ligero (Xochimilco light rail) to Estadio Azteca station. Mexico City's Metro is one of the world's busiest and extremely affordable.

🚗 Driving & Parking

Located in the south of the city off the Anillo Periférico ring road. Traffic in Mexico City is notoriously heavy; public transit is strongly recommended.

Fan Zones & Watch Parties

The Zócalo (Plaza de la Constitución), Mexico City's main square and one of the largest public plazas in the world, is the expected FIFA Fan Fest location — it has hosted massive national celebrations and public screenings for decades. Paseo de la Reforma may also host fan activities.

Fan zone locations are based on historical precedent. Official FIFA Fan Fest details will be confirmed closer to the tournament.

☀️

Weather & What to Pack

Mexico City in June-July is rainy season — expect afternoon and evening downpours almost daily, though mornings are usually sunny. The city sits at 7,350 feet elevation, keeping temperatures mild (average highs of 77°F / 25°C) despite being tropical. The altitude can affect visitors — drink plenty of water, take it easy on day one, and limit alcohol until you've acclimated. Estadio Azteca is open-air, so rain gear is essential for evening matches. The combination of altitude and sun can cause sunburn faster than expected even on cloudy days.

Where to Eat & Drink in Mexico City

Mexico City is one of the world's greatest food destinations, full stop. Street tacos al pastor at any trompo stand are transcendent — El Vilsito (a mechanics shop that becomes a taco stand at night) is legendary. For sit-down, Pujol and Quintonil are regularly on the World's 50 Best list. Mercado de San Juan in the centro has exotic meats, fresh seafood, and incredible prepared food stalls. In Roma Norte, Contramar serves the definitive tuna tostadas and grilled fish. Churros and hot chocolate at El Moro (open since 1935) are the perfect late-night snack. For mezcal, explore the bars along Alvaro Obregón in Roma. Near the Azteca, the Coapa neighborhood has local fondas (family restaurants) with set-menu comida corrida lunches for under $5.

🏨

Where to Stay in Mexico City

Roma Norte and Condesa are the most popular neighborhoods for visitors — tree-lined streets, walkable restaurants, boutique hotels ($80-180/night, significantly cheaper than US cities). Polanco is the upscale district with international luxury chains. Centro Histórico has budget hostels and mid-range hotels steps from the Zócalo and cultural attractions. Near the Azteca, accommodations are limited — most visitors stay in Roma/Condesa and take the Metro or rideshare to the stadium. Airbnb is incredibly well-priced in Mexico City, with entire apartments in prime neighborhoods for $50-100/night. The exchange rate makes CDMX one of the most affordable World Cup destinations.

Match Day Experience

Nothing in world football quite compares to the atmosphere at Estadio Azteca for a Mexico match. The 'Ola' (the wave) originated here, and the coordinated chants of 87,000+ fans create a wall of sound. Take Metro Line 2 south to Tasqueña, then the Tren Ligero to Estadio Azteca station — it's cheap, efficient, and an experience in itself as the train fills with singing fans. Arrive early because security lines can be long. Inside, the altitude means the ball moves differently and players tire faster — knowledgeable Mexican fans know this and use it to will their team on. The Opening Match on June 11 at the Azteca will be one of the greatest sporting events of the decade. After the match, the Tren Ligero back is packed — allow 60-90 minutes to return to your hotel.

Local Tips — Mexico City

Mexico City is one of the world's great food cities — street tacos al pastor, markets like Mercado de San Juan, and world-class restaurants like Pujol. Visit the National Museum of Anthropology, explore Coyoacán (Frida Kahlo's neighborhood), and take in the murals of Diego Rivera at the Palacio Nacional.

Safety & Etiquette

Mexico City is a massive metropolis that requires typical big-city awareness. Tourist-friendly neighborhoods (Roma, Condesa, Polanco, Centro Histórico) are generally safe during the day. Use authorized taxis (Sitio taxis or ride apps like Uber/DiDi) rather than hailing cabs on the street. The Metro is safe during the day but can be crowded — watch for pickpockets. Drink bottled water only. Altitude sickness affects some visitors — take it easy on day one, stay hydrated, and limit alcohol until you've acclimated. Most importantly, Mexico City locals are incredibly warm and helpful to visitors.
