About Estadio Akron

Estadio Akron, home of Chivas de Guadalajara, brings World Cup football to Mexico's second-largest city. Guadalajara is the birthplace of mariachi and tequila — and its passionate football culture makes it one of the most atmospheric venues in the tournament.

Opened in 2010, Estadio Akron (also known as Estadio Chivas) is the home of C.D. Guadalajara (Chivas), one of Mexico's most popular clubs. The striking volcanic-rock-inspired exterior design makes it one of the most architecturally distinctive stadiums in the Americas. It hosted matches during the 2011 Pan American Games.

Getting to Estadio Akron

✈️ Airport

Guadalajara International Airport (GDL) is about 20 miles from the stadium.

🚇 Public Transit

Guadalajara's Mi Macro Periférico bus rapid transit line connects to the area near the stadium along the Periférico ring road. The city also has light rail lines, though none go directly to the stadium. Expect special shuttle service for World Cup matches.

🚗 Driving & Parking

Located in the northwestern suburbs in Zapopan, off the Periférico ring road. Parking is available on-site. Taxis and rideshare (Uber/DiDi) are widely available and affordable.

Fan Zones & Watch Parties

Guadalajara's historic Centro Histórico, particularly around the Plaza de Armas, is the expected fan zone hub. The Chapultepec Avenue corridor (Avenida Chapultepec) is the city's main nightlife and entertainment street and a natural gathering spot.

Fan zone locations are based on historical precedent. Official FIFA Fan Fest details will be confirmed closer to the tournament.

☀️

Weather & What to Pack

Guadalajara in June-July is rainy season with daily afternoon thunderstorms, but mornings are typically sunny and warm. Average highs are around 86°F (30°C) with moderate humidity. The city sits at 5,100 feet elevation, making it slightly cooler than coastal Mexico. Estadio Akron is open-air, so bring rain gear for any evening match. The sun is strong at this altitude — sunscreen is essential even if it looks overcast. Evenings after rain are pleasant with temperatures dropping into the mid-60s.

Where to Eat & Drink in Guadalajara

Guadalajara is the birthplace of several iconic Mexican dishes. Birria (slow-cooked goat or beef stew) is the city's signature — try it at Birriería Las 9 Esquinas in the centro. Tortas ahogadas (drowned pork sandwiches in spicy tomato sauce) are another local specialty — every neighborhood has a favorite stand. For a market experience, Mercado San Juan de Dios is the largest indoor market in Latin America with food stalls, crafts, and anything else you can imagine. In Chapultepec (the nightlife corridor), Alcalde is a high-end contemporary Mexican restaurant worth the splurge. For tequila tasting, skip tourist traps and visit Casa Sauza or Tequila Selecto for proper guided tastings.

🏨

Where to Stay in Guadalajara

Guadalajara's historic Centro has colonial hotels and hostels at very affordable rates ($40-120/night). The Chapultepec/Americana zone has modern hotels, nightlife, and is walkable. Providencia and Colonia Americana are leafy residential neighborhoods with excellent Airbnb options ($40-80/night). Near the stadium in Zapopan, there are a few chain hotels but limited dining — staying in the centro or Chapultepec and taking a rideshare to matches (about 30 minutes) is the better experience. Mexico's hotel prices are a fraction of US prices, making Guadalajara one of the most budget-friendly World Cup cities overall.

Match Day Experience

Estadio Akron sits in a suburban area of Zapopan, about 30 minutes northwest of central Guadalajara. There's no direct rail connection — most fans will arrive by rideshare, taxi, or organized shuttle buses. The stadium's distinctive volcanic-rock exterior is photogenic and the surrounding parkland provides gathering space. Chivas (the home team) fans are among the most passionate in Mexican football, and their traditions — including elaborate pre-match rituals and coordinated chanting — will carry over to World Cup matches. The smaller capacity (49,850) compared to US mega-stadiums creates a more intimate, intense atmosphere. After matches, the Mi Macro Periférico bus line and rideshare are your best options back to the city center.

Local Tips — Guadalajara

Guadalajara is the birthplace of mariachi and tequila — visit Tlaquepaque for artisan crafts, take a day trip to the town of Tequila (including the Jose Cuervo Express train), and eat birria (the city's signature dish) at a traditional market.

Safety & Etiquette

Guadalajara's tourist areas (Centro, Chapultepec, Tlaquepaque) are generally safe. Use authorized transportation — Uber and DiDi work well throughout the city. Drink bottled water and be cautious with street food vendors until your stomach adjusts (or dive in and accept the consequences like a true traveler). The Zapopan area around the stadium is residential and safe. Mexican hospitality is genuine — locals will go out of their way to help you find your way. Learn a few phrases of Spanish — it goes a long way. Keep valuables secure in crowded market areas.
