The 2026-27 European season doesn't start on one date. It rolls out over three weekends: Portugal first, then Spain, then England, France, and Italy in a 36-hour pile-up. If you're the one who runs the pool, that stagger is your deadline sheet — and the first kickoff is now six days away.
Here's the checklist. Work through it once and your pool runs itself until May.
📅 Know Your Kickoff Date
Five leagues, five calendars:
| League | First kickoff | Clubs | Gameweeks |
|---|---|---|---|
| Primeira Liga | Friday, August 7 | 18 | 34 |
| La Liga | Saturday, August 15 | 20 | 38 |
| Premier League | Friday, August 21 | 20 | 38 |
| Ligue 1 | Friday, August 21 | 18 | 34 |
| Serie A | Saturday, August 22 | 20 | 38 |
Two things to notice. First, the Primeira Liga opens a full two weeks before the Premier League — if your group plays more than one league, the Portuguese pool is your dress rehearsal. Second, the 18-club leagues (Ligue 1, Primeira) play 34 rounds, not 38, and their survivor slates are 18 teams, not 20. The season is shorter and the picks are scarcer — it changes the math more than you'd think.
✅ Step 1: Pick Your Format (or Both)
Two season-long games, same fixtures, very different temperaments:
- Survivor / Last Man Standing — one team a week, they must win, no reusing teams, last one alive takes the pot. Slow-burn tension that builds for nine months.
- Pick'em (Pick 5) — call five results a week, sweep all five to win the pot, watch it roll over when nobody does. Weekly action, no eliminations, ever.
Plenty of groups run one of each. They share the fixtures and the group chat; they don't share a pool — each pool lives in exactly one league, on that league's own calendar.
✅ Step 2: Agree the House Rules Before Anyone Picks
Every rules argument your pool will ever have can be settled in advance, at creation, where the app then enforces it automatically:
- Survivor dials: do draws eliminate or survive? Does the team slate reset once you've used every club, or is exhausting it the finish line? Are late joiners welcome? Are rebuys allowed?
- Pick'em's one big decision: what happens if the season ends with the pot still rolling — split it among the season's best, carry it to next season, or let the commissioner decide?
The specifics deserve their own posts (and they'll get them this month). The checklist item is simpler: decide now, in writing, in the pool settings. A rule chosen in August is a rule; a rule chosen in March is a controversy.
✅ Step 3: Set the Money Up Honestly
The part every commissioner should be able to recite:
- You collect the pot. You hold the pot. You pay out the pot. Golazo tracks who's paid and what the pot is worth — it never touches the money itself.
- Survivor is one entry fee per player for the season (plus rebuys, if you allow them). Pick'em stakes are per gameweek — you can enter a season total when you create the pool and it converts to the weekly equivalent.
- List how you actually want to be paid (Venmo, cash, whatever your group uses) right on the pool so nobody has to ask.
✅ Step 4: Invite the Group
One invite code, shared once. Pools of 5 or fewer are free — not a trial, just free. Larger pools pay a hosting fee of $2 per member above five, billed to the commissioner, and it only grows if the pool grows. Start with your five, see who else wants in.
✅ Step 5: Put the First Deadline in Your Calendar
Picks lock at each gameweek's first kickoff — and broadcasters move kickoff times all season, so the deadline is whatever fixture ends up going first, not what the fixture list said in July. Golazo sends day-before and last-call reminders to everyone, but week one has a special failure mode: people who joined and never made a pick at all. In survivor, a missed deadline is an elimination. Nag accordingly.
🗓️ Why the Stagger Is a Gift
If the Premier League is your main event, the calendar just handed you two rehearsal weekends. A small Primeira Liga pool costs nothing to run, teaches your group the rhythm — deadline, sweat, results, argue, repeat — and settles the rules debates while the stakes are low. By August 21 you're not explaining how the game works; you're arguing about picks. That's the good kind of arguing.
⚡ TL;DR
- Openers: Primeira Aug 7, La Liga Aug 15, EPL & Ligue 1 Aug 21, Serie A Aug 22
- 18-club leagues play 34 rounds with 18-team survivor slates — plan for scarcity
- Set the rule dials at creation — draws, resets, rebuys, late join, final-week pot
- Commissioner collects and holds all money; the app keeps the ledger
- Free for 5 or fewer members — get the core group in this week
