The pick: Argentina, 2-1.
The reasoning:
- The champion's curse is overstated. Recent back-to-back winners (Italy 1934-38, Brazil 1958-62) prove repeats happen.
- Continental advantage. Argentina is, in effect, a near-home team for any match in the Americas. The crowd will be 60% theirs in any non-USMNT venue.
- The structural fit. Argentina's 4-4-2 medium-block + transition game is built for 90°F summer afternoons in Atlanta and Dallas. They'll be fresh in extra time.
- The intangibles. They've already done it. Portugal hasn't.
🏆 The pick: Argentina. Repeat champions for the first time since Brazil 1962.
🎯 Dark Horse to Track
If I'm wrong about Argentina, my second-most-likely champion is France.
If I'm wrong about France too, Spain.
If you're contrarian, Portugal is a defensible final pick — they're the team most under-loved relative to their actual quality.
🏃 Top Scorer Pick
Kylian Mbappé. France gets to at least the QF, he plays 5+ matches, and even on a "quiet" tournament he scores 5–6.

For my own pool, here's the actual slate:
