Tonight in Portugal, the first survivor picks of the 2026-27 season lock for real. Over the next three weeks the same first-gameweek moment arrives in Spain, England, France, and Italy — and in every one of those leagues, a chunk of each pool will be eliminated in week one while holding a pick they thought was safe.
Gameweek 1 isn't the hardest week of the season. It's the week most systematically misread. The trap has three parts.
🪤 False Belief #1: "Opening Fixtures Are Free Wins"
The opening weekend looks soft on paper: big clubs at home, promoted sides visiting, everyone fresh. What the paper doesn't show:
- Nobody has form data. Every judgment you're making is based on last season's table plus vibes, and last season ended with different squads, different managers, and — this year — a World Cup in between. August 2026 form will not look like May 2026 form.
- Promoted clubs peak in week one. They arrive match-fit from playoff runs, drilled, and playing the game of their lives — the classic week-one exit is a big club picked against a promoted side that refuses to cooperate. If you must pick against one, prefer catching them away from home.
- World Cup hangover, maximum strength. This season starts closer to a World Cup final than any before it. Squads whose stars went deep into July are starting their engines cold.
🪤 False Belief #2: "I'll Just Take the Best Team"
In survivor, every pick spends a resource you never get back that cycle. Pick a title contender in gameweek 1 and you've used your most valuable asset in the single week of the season where information is worst. Maximum cost, minimum edge.
The slate math sharpens this. Your pick budget is the league size — 20 teams in the Premier League, La Liga, and Serie A; only 18 in Ligue 1 and the Primeira Liga. In an 18-club league every premium club spent early is a bigger fraction of your season gone, and the winter weeks where you'll desperately want a banker are exactly the weeks your rivals who saved theirs will coast through.
You can't win the pool in gameweek 1. You can only fail to lose it — so pay the minimum price for surviving.
🪤 False Belief #3: "A Draw Won't Happen to Me"
Under standard rules a draw eliminates you exactly like a loss, and roughly a quarter of league matches end level. Opening weekends are nervy, cagey, feeling-each-other-out affairs — precisely the conditions that produce a 0-0 between a favorite and an organized defensive side.
The fix is to stop asking "who won't lose?" and start asking "who has a reason to attack?" A home side expected to take the game to a weaker opponent can still stumble, but they're structurally trying to produce the result you need. A big club content to manage a point away from home is not.
(Check your own pool's settings first — some pools enable draws-survive, and that changes this calculus entirely.)
✅ The Non-Trap Gameweek 1 Pick
The profile, in priority order:
- Home side — the one advantage that doesn't depend on form data
- Continuity — same manager, same core, quiet summer, few World Cup miles
- Opponent in transition — promoted sides on the road, clubs mid-rebuild
- A reason to attack — expected to dominate, playing in front of their crowd
- Not the season's very first fixture — use the extra day of team news; opening-night matches are the weirdest of the year
That usually lands on a solid mid-table club at home — a good-not-great pick that gets you to gameweek 2 with your bankers intact. That is the entire job.
🚨 The Most Common Week-One Exit of All
It isn't a bad pick. It's no pick. Every season, in every pool, someone joins, means to pick after work, and discovers that a missed deadline is an elimination. Picks lock at the gameweek's first kickoff — which moves when broadcasters shuffle the schedule, so trust your pool's countdown rather than a fixture list you saw in July. Golazo sends day-before and last-call reminders by email and push; the final step, tapping a team, remains stubbornly manual.
⚡ TL;DR
- GW1 is the season's worst-information week — treat it that way
- Don't spend an elite club: the slate is only 20 teams — 18 in Ligue 1 / Primeira
- Promoted sides at home in August are the classic week-one exit
- Pick a home side with a reason to attack — draws eliminate by default
- The deadline is the first kickoff; the most common exit is no pick at all
