About NRG Stadium

NRG Stadium brings World Cup football to Houston, one of the most diverse cities in America. Houston's strong Mexican-American and Central American communities make it a natural hotbed for international soccer.

Opened in 2002 as Reliant Stadium, NRG Stadium was the first retractable-roof stadium in the NFL and is the home of the Houston Texans. It hosts the annual Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo — the world's largest — and has hosted Super Bowl XXXVIII (2004) and Super Bowl LI (2017), famous for the Patriots' 28-3 comeback.

Getting to NRG Stadium

✈️ Airport

George Bush Intercontinental (IAH) is the main international hub, about 25 miles north. William P. Hobby Airport (HOU) is closer at about 10 miles.

🚇 Public Transit

METRORail's Red Line serves the NRG Park/Fannin South station adjacent to the stadium complex. The rail line connects to downtown Houston.

🚗 Driving & Parking

Located in NRG Park off Loop 610 South. The NRG Park complex has massive parking areas; pre-paid parking is available.

Fan Zones & Watch Parties

Discovery Green park in downtown Houston is the expected FIFA Fan Fest location — it's a 12-acre park surrounded by hotels and the convention center that has hosted previous major event fan zones.

Fan zone locations are based on historical precedent. Official FIFA Fan Fest details will be confirmed closer to the tournament.

☀️

Weather & What to Pack

Houston in June-July is brutally hot and humid — average highs of 94°F (34°C) with humidity making it feel well over 100°F. NRG Stadium has a retractable roof that will almost certainly be closed with air conditioning for matches. Outside, the heat is relentless from mid-morning onward. Carry water everywhere, wear moisture-wicking clothing, and limit time in direct sun. Afternoon thunderstorms are frequent and intense but usually pass within an hour. The evening doesn't bring much relief — temperatures stay warm well past sunset.

Where to Eat & Drink in Houston

Houston is America's most ethnically diverse city and its food scene reflects it. For BBQ, Truth BBQ on Washington Avenue is the current king (the beef rib is legendary), with Killen's Barbecue in nearby Pearland a close second. The Bellaire Chinatown strip along Bellaire Blvd has incredible dim sum at Fung's Kitchen and hand-pulled noodles at Tiger Den. Crawfish and Vietnamese-Cajun fusion is a Houston original — try Crawfish & Noodles. For upscale Tex-Mex, Hugo's in Montrose features interior Mexican cuisine. Near NRG Stadium, the NRG Park area has limited options — eat in Montrose or the Museum District before heading to the match.

🏨

Where to Stay in Houston

The Museum District and Montrose neighborhoods offer the best balance of walkable culture, restaurants, and METRORail access to NRG Stadium ($180-300/night). Downtown Houston has business-class hotels with easy rail connections. The Medical Center area (near NRG) has hotels at lower rates. For budget stays, hotels along the I-610 loop corridor or near Hobby Airport (connected by bus) keep costs down ($100-180/night). The Galleria area in Uptown has shopping and dining but limited transit to the stadium. Houston is a driving city, so if you rent a car, anywhere inside the 610 loop is convenient.

Match Day Experience

NRG Stadium's location in the NRG Park complex means there's space for massive tailgating and pre-match gatherings. METRORail's Red Line runs directly to NRG Park — it's the easiest way to get there from downtown or the Museum District. The retractable roof and air conditioning will be a blessing in the Houston heat. NRG has hosted Super Bowls and rodeo events, so the operations are well-polished. Food and drink inside are typical stadium fare — eat well before you arrive. After the match, METRORail runs extended service but expect packed trains. The nearby Kirby Drive restaurant corridor is a good spot to wait out the crowd.

Local Tips — Houston

Houston is America's most diverse city with incredible food — Vietnamese in Midtown, Tex-Mex everywhere, and world-famous BBQ. Visit the Museum District (19 museums, many free), and don't miss Space Center Houston if you have a day to spare.

Safety & Etiquette

Houston is a spread-out city where most activity happens in designated districts. The Museum District, Montrose, and Midtown are safe and walkable. NRG Park area is residential and safe on match days with heavy security. Houston's heat and humidity are the primary safety concern — heat stroke is a real danger for visitors from cooler climates. Always carry water, wear sunscreen, and don't underestimate how quickly dehydration sets in. If driving, Houston's highway system is complex — use GPS navigation and stay alert for aggressive drivers.
